STABILIZATION
Building Lasting Change for Families
At Family Promise of Mid Michigan, stabilization isn’t an afterthought — it’s a necessary part of the journey to prevent families from returning to homelessness. By staying engaged with families after they exit shelter or housing programs, we reduce the trauma of homelessness, strengthen family well-being, and build stronger communities.
Why Stabilization Matters:
Homelessness doesn’t end when a family gets housed. Families continue to face financial strain, employment barriers, mental health challenges, and the weight of past debts. Our stabilization programming supports families as they navigate these secondary traumas — helping parents regain confidence, children feel secure, and the entire household move forward with hope.
How We Support Stabilization:
-
LIFT (Living Independently for Tomorrow): Transitional housing and personalized case management help families maintain stability as they rebuild.
-
Bright Futures: Offers tutoring, meals, mentorship, and access to essentials for children in doubled-up or motel situations — creating consistency and opportunity during uncertain times.
-
Continued Coaching: Families receive ongoing support in budgeting, job readiness, life skills, and access to community resources tailored to their needs.
-
Connection to Resources: We build strong partnerships with landlords, faith communities, and local organizations to ensure a network of support.
-
Flexible & Family-Centered: We meet families where they are — offering non-traditional hours, trauma-informed care, incentives like grocery cards and utility support, and essentials like transportation, child care, and meals during meetings.
-
Ongoing Relationships: Our work is rooted in relationships. Families stay engaged not because they have to — but because they feel seen, heard, and supported.
The Impact:
Stabilization improves quality of life, strengthens long-term housing success, and empowers families to lead independent lives. It also helps our community thrive — reducing the social and economic costs of homelessness and increasing collaboration across sectors.
Our commitment doesn't end when families leave shelter — that's when the most important work begins.
